In comics "out of continuity" means the author is free to use or ignore whatever parts of a character's history they choose. Batman Earth One is out of continuity, and Johns keeps the core story of Batman's origin but changes a lot of particulars. If you like your Batman to be hyper competent like James Bond or Sherlock Holmes then you won't like this version. If you prefer a fallible Batman who makes mistakes then you will like this. If you have always wanted an Alfred Pennyworth who is a hardcore badass then this is the story you have looked for your whole life.
