Millar takes a Super Friends style superhero team and places them in a surprisingly realistic America of the Fifties and early Sixties. A closeted gay hero is blackmailed by the FBI with the threat of his secret life being exposed. Another hero has an affair with a woman half his age and ends up making a public fool of himself. A playboy Tony Stark style hero has his fiancee stolen by the team's weaselly psychic character and quits in disgust when no one believes him. It is basically Mad Men with super powers, but it is surprisingly sophisticated material for Mark Millar who is a writer not known for subtlety.
