Fear the Walking Archies

Afterlife with Archie: Escape from Riverdale - Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Francesco Francavilla

The biggest surprise of Afterlife with Archie is that it is not a parody of a horror story, it is a serious zombie horror story featuring the Archie characters. Archie comics have been frozen in a kind of light comedy limbo for decades. The family-friendly comics have told the same unchanging story with the same art style since the 1950's at least. In recent years Archie comics have attempted to modernize, updating the art and references to the 21st century, even adding an out gay character. Afterlife with Archie is by far the oddest thing they have done. In one scene Jughead is brutally attached by his zombified dog. In another Archie is forced to defend his mother by beating his zombie Dad with a baseball bat. Absolutely not for little kids.
